Waterless communities get access to safe drinking water

MANAY, DAVAO ORIENTAL – New potable water systems have recently been inaugurated and turned over in seven waterless areas in Manay town, giving residents here access to safe drinking water.

The residents in these far-flung areas expressed their gratitude that they now have easy access to potable water supply that can now reach their homes without them having to endure long walks just to fetch water from its source.

Funds for the construction of these new potable water systems were shelled out by the Department of Interior and Local Government’s Bottom-Up Budgeting (BUB) Program – Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig sa Lahat or Salintubig Program and the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental and the Local Government of Manay.

Four of these water systems were funded under the DILG’s Salintubig Program while the rest were funded by the Provincial Government and Local Government Unit of Manay in their bid to provide potable water supply to the communities.

Among the barangays that were provided with new water systems are Mabini, San Isidro, Lambog and four areas in Barangay Central. The Provincial Engineering Office said that these water system projects consist of level two and level three types Potable Water System.

Under the DILG’s Salintubig Program, development of infrastructure for the provision of potable water systems have been implemented pursuant to its commitment to provide water, particularly for poor and waterless communities.

During the turnover ceremony, DILG XI Regional Director Ananias M. Villacorta told residents to take care of these new water systems in order to make them sustainable and serve more people in the future. “Maintenance for these water systems is not the sole responsibility of the government but a shared obligation of the communities as they are the primary stakeholders,” he said.

For her part, Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon thanked the DILG for helping provide potable water supply to the residents of the remote villages of Manay.

She said that the provision of safe drinking water to the communities is one of the topmost priorities of the Provincial Government since it is one of the most basic needs in every community. To ensure the delivery of this important social service, she said that the government has been investing portion of its resources to make sure that communities are well-provided with sufficient and continuous safe water supply through the provision of Potable Water Systems, particularly in far-flung areas, where safe drinking water is often scarce due to the lack of facilities. The provision of PWS is considered to be one of the Provincial Government’s priority projects identified in its Five Point Development Agenda under the Expansion of Access to Infrastructures, Utilities and Services.
