Provincial Meet 2017 Held in Lupon Town

DAVAO ORIENTAL—The annual provincial sports meet this year was held in Lupon Town on December 13-15.

The three-day provincial sports meet gathered thousands of student-athletes from all the elementary and secondary schools in ten municipalities here who competed in different sports such as badminton, baseball, basketball, and boxing, among many others.

Welcoming the participants of the event is Lupon Municipal mayor Erlinda Lim who expressed her gratefulness for having hosted the event as they have “always considered this event prestigious” and promised that they “will continue investing for the completion of Lupon Sports and Athletic Center and envision that someday we can offer a better sporting facility in this part of Davao Oriental”.

Governor Nelson Dayanghirang also expressed his support towards achieving excellence through sports. In a message read for him by Provincial Administrator Art Benjie Bulaong, he has inspired the student-athletes to become significant instruments in promoting excellence in sports and in life.

Provincial Administrator Art Benjie Bulaong

“Excellence in performance and in life begins with a vision of where you want to go and a commitment to do what it takes to get there… While indeed there are many ways to practice a vigorous way of life, sports is undeniably the best means of being fit and to strengthen the social fabric of our society. Being fit can mean many things. The physical education, the sports teachers, and the practitioners of the sport may convene us for the need of a sound mind in a sound body. What benefit can we get if we continue sharpening our mental intellect but disregard our physique? Certainly, a sound mind is perfect if it is in a sound body”, the governor said.

Also stressing that the provincial meet is an avenue to “celebrate each one’s differences”, Alona Uy, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Davao Oriental said that “more than the goal of bringing the bacon or the gold home, it is also our dream to have more friends in this competition because we do not want to go home bringing with us enemies. We want to go home to our respective schools and municipalities with a heart full of gratitude and a heart full of happiness because we have been able to encounter friends who will help us along the way. This is a competition but remember dear athletes that this is an avenue for you to hone your potential”.

Dr. Lorenzo Mendoza, Schools Division Superintendent of Davao Oriental had likewise reminded the players the importance of fair play during the opening ceremony while striving to win the gold. He quoted the famous mantra that “It is not in the winning the game that counts, it is on how you play the game”, emphasizing that the sports event is aimed at observing the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, among others.

“In the first place, after the game, we will be one as one division of Davao Oriental during the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet this coming January in the Division of Davao City”, he added. By Riza Golez/ Photo by Eden Jhan Licayan
