Among the meeting’s highlight agenda is the identification of strategies on how stakeholders can prevent and counter violent extremism. The members agree to drum-up programs and advocacy campaign especially in schools as one of the strategies of preventing radicalization among the youth who are the most vulnerable sector in violent extremism.

Meanwhile, Dayanghirang, who is a former member of the government’s peace panel, pointed out that good governance remains to be the best way to combat insurgency and to counter violent extremism.

“The innate nature of insurgency is a political problem. Insurgency is not a military problem,” he said.  “Our way to peace is good governance supported by a strong military support and that is what is happening in Davao Oriental. And the proof of that is that Davao Oriental is the only province that passed the Seal of Good Local Governance in Davao Region. You can see the consistency of the peace and order in the ground here and Davao Oriental being recognized by the Department of Interior and Local Government,” he added.
