Newly installed Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang vows to continue the successful programs of former governor, now First District Rep. Corazon Malanyaon, whom he credited for “transforming the image of our province from a sorry one to that which is full of vibrancy and confidence and leaving it in top shape… which is the administrative envy of many local government units.”

During his inaugural speech, which was delivered on July 1, in time of the 49th founding anniversary of Davao Oriental, Governor Dayanghirang emphasized that he would continue to pursue the development agenda of former Governor Malanyaon “whom I look up to the most, my idol, elder sister, role model, advisor and mentor rolled into one.”

“Today is not the dawn of a new age or a new era or a new beginning as inaugurations often connote. What I see today, what we witness now is rather more like passing of torch or changing of guard. Having ran her leg, Gov Cora is passing the baton to me and it is now my time to run this leg. This view emphasizes the element of continuity which will be the operative theme of this new administration’s three-year term. Simply said, having witnessed how the key policies, priority projects and programs of the outgoing administration has impacted on the province, these will be adopted and continued by this administration. Most notably on the areas of health and social service initiatives and programs. We will be tapping tourism as engine for socio-economic growth through the development of eco-tourism parks and amusement and recreation facilities initiated by Governor Malanyaon. Agriculture will remain as the major focus industry of the province by providing access through infrastructure development thereby ensuring the livelihood of our farmers. As to the environment sector, we will be giving more focus on climate change or global warming adaptation and mitigation. And we will be providing full support for peace and order initiatives for sustainable development,” says Gov. Dayanghirang before a jam-packed crowd at the Provincial Capitol’s covered court.

The new governor devoted much of his speech giving tribute to former Governor Malanyaon. “It is said that the mettle of person’s character is truly tested and measured during times of great adversity. Governor Cora certainly revealed to us that she is made of solid stuff. It would not have been a surprise for us if a woman, or even a man for that matter, folds in the face of typhoon Pablo’s utter devastating effect, but instead, Gov Cora appeared to revel, to thrive, even, as she rolled up her sleeves and began to govern what will go down as one, if not the most, difficult periods of time in the history of Davao Oriental. She became captain of the ship immediately after a deadly storm hit it and not only did she steer the ship with superb skill during the storm but brought it through the storm as well. Our province is significantly better off today than when she assumed the position in 2007, and for all the good things that you have done for the province, we are eternally grateful. Let us give Gov Cora a big round of applause. We salute you! It is a good thing I am only succeeding you, because no one, and I repeat, no one, can ever replace you, maam.”

HUMBLE BEGINNING

Clad in Barong Tagalog, the 50-year-old Governor Dayanghirang, was sworn into office by Judge Emilio Dayanghirang of the Regional Trial Court Branch 32 on Friday, July 1, 2016.

“Today, as I begin my responsibility as the ninth governor of the Province of Davao Oriental, I will never forget that no matter what my official title may now be, I am servant of the people. I am fortunate to live in a province where someone from humble beginnings can grow up and be chosen as its leader. Bilang inyong gobernador, makakaasa po kayo sa isang matatag na pamamahala. Isang liderato na lagi nyong masasandalan. Isang administrasyong hinding hindi kayo iiwan at mananatiling tapat sa inyong lahat ngayon at kailanman.”

“There are moments in life that truly stand apart and today’s inaugural event, which is providentially occasioned on the very day that our beloved province of Davao Oriental celebrates its 49th founding anniversary, is certainly one of those. Today marks the greatest honor that I have achieved in my public service career, one that spans years of sincere and dedicated work in the service of the people, to be sworn in as governor, the highest office in the local government. While this is indeed a moment to be really proud of, it is equally a humbling one for me as I remember the tremendous effort and support as well as the enormous amount of trust and confidence that you have given me during the elections last May. If not for you, this moment could not have been realized. No one reaches this position alone. I know fully well I did not, so it is just but fitting for me to convey my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for making possible what is certainly the greatest moment of my life.”

Governor Dayanghirang has lead his local political party, Kusog Davao Oriental, to a historic victory in the just concluded 2016 polls in the province. Dubbed as a “listening, genuinely consultative leader,” Dayanghirang trounced his sole rival in the gubernatorial race, Thelma Almario, with a huge lead of 36,352 votes. Dayanghirang got 139,445 votes over Almario’s 103,093 votes. His running mate Nino Sotero Uy was also elected vice governor.
