October 9, 2014, City of Mati, Davao Oriental. The Provincial Cooperative Office headed by Mr. Pacifico V. Castillones, Jr. spearheaded the conduct of the 3rd Prov’l.  Cooperative Tri-Sectoral Forum, held at the Honey’s Hotel and Restaurant, Matiao, City of Mati.  Over a hundred people participated in the activity representing  Provincial Government, Local Government Units, Cooperatives and National Government Offices .

Distinguished guests were headed by Governor Corazon  Nunez-Malanyaon, joined by Hon. Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Louie N. Rabat and Dante Caubang,  Development Bank of the Phils  Mati Branch Manager  Ms. Amy Tinapay  and   LBP representative Arnold Talbin. Guests from Region XI were composed of the Cooperatives Development Authority (CDA)  Regional Director  Elma R. Oguis and  Mindanao Development Authority (MINDA)  Manager  Ms. Cecilia   Trino.  National Government Offices  who joined includes the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Dept of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Technical Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) , Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR).

Keynote Speech was provided by Ms. Cecilia Trino, Manager of the Northeastern Mindanao Area,  Mindanao Development Authority-XI (MINDA- XI) with the topic  The Future of Small and Medium Enterprise ves avee Asian Integration”. It was a very relevant subject, inasmuch as cooperatives are into various micro and  small livelihood ventures.

The Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product is higher than that achieved by Singapore” quoted Ms. Trino.  She confirmed that cacao produced by the island of Mindanao, is one of the highest quality produced worldwide. Such  informations  provides listeners with high hopes that we can compete with other members of the ASEAN Economic Community.

 Department of Trade and Industry represented by Ms. Zaida Fe I. Ramiro  as  reactor,  provided a brief overview of the “ASEAN INTEGRATION concept” for the understanding and appreciation of the participants. By quoting the words of the MINDA representative, Ms. Ramiro  said that “The growth of Philippine  GDP which is higher than that of Singapore is a  such a good news. Therefore, we should not be afraid of what is about to come”. She assured everyone that the country has already acted on some measures, as preparatory to the AEC 2015, hence, we,  as business enterprises should also brace ourselves  for the competition.

 Another highlight of the activity was the updates given by the CDA Reg’l Director, Elma A. Oguis who closely look into the new rules and laws  governing the operation of a cooperative to be competitive.

The Department of Interior and Local Government, represented by Ma. Theresa Obatonon, gave her observations on the current gaps of local cooperatives and what can the CDA do about this? CDA  Reg’l  Director acknowledged & recognized these gaps, and she said that her office is trying their best efforts, however, she also commented that the development of cooperatives lies not only with the CDA, but a joint efforts of all the development oriented agencies. “Therefore, we should all help one another, concluded Director Oguis.

The 3rd Prov’l Cooperative Tri-Sectoral Forum proved to be significant for all the cooperatives operating within Davao Oriental, as it highlights their celebration of the “ Cooperative Month”. During the forum, performing coops of the year were given due recognition and awards,  by no less than the CDA Regional Director witnessed by  local  Officials present/ZIR/Photo by Karen Lou Deloso
